Introduction: With the arrival of the 1978 Constitution and the autonomous debate, the Province of Logroño was called to integrate into another Autonomous Community, without giving it the option of claiming autonomy. However, the impulse of society, supported by the political parties that were being formed, as well as by the press and other entities, managed to achieve the desired autonomy, recognized by the Spanish Cortes in 1982 after years of demands and identity demonstrations. Methodology: The methodology to follow will be the analysis of the electoral results and that of the regional press in these years of the autonomous process, a key factor in the achievement of autonomy, especially the newspaper Nueva Rioja, trying to understand the importance of the press in this process. In addition, the political and voting evolution in the parties that defended autonomy and the application of regional norms and the creation of regional institutions will be integrated. Results: The main results obtained in this research demonstrate the importance of the popular movement and the role of the press in the Riojan autonomous process, in which, in less than five years, a secondary region practically marginalized from political debate became at the center of an issue that was resolved in the most favorable way for its citizens, with the consequent economic and social development and self-government that they sought. Discussions: The general elections of 1977, 1979 and 1982 will elucidate a hitherto unknown political panorama, in which the party system will evolve towards a two-party system typical of democratic Europe. Conclusions: The achievement of Rioja autonomy was the result of the confluence of numerous factors developed over several years: popular and associative demands, support from the press and media, local and regional institutional support, the agreement of political parties at the regional level, etc.
