Abstract

Introduction: Comparative study between professional film criticism, Caimán. Cuadernos de Cine, and amateur, Filmaffinity. Methodology: The research was conducted through a quantitative analysis using samples from the rankings of the best Spanish films. For Caimán, the survey conducted in 2016 was used, and for Filmaffinity, the current list was taken along with backups captured from Archive.org for the years 2023, 2022, and 2021. Results: There is a strong correlation between both rankings. At the same time, Filmaffinity shows a clear temporal bias, rating a greater number of recent films higher and less representation from the early decades of Spanish cinema. Caimán, on the other hand, shows a greater temporal balance. Discussions: It is significant that both samples largely agree on the most relevant works and directors in Spanish cinema. However, there are some cases that lead to debate, such as the films of Almodóvar and Amenábar. Conclusions: The data affirm that the reviews on Filmaffinity are a good reflection of professional criticism. Therefore, this study highlights the challenge faced by professional critics as the exclusive guardians of cinema quality standards.
