Abstract

Introduction: The current linear economy model in waste management leads to accumulation in cities, especially in Mexico City, due to the lack of necessary infrastructure to implement a circular economy and the need for public collaboration. Methodology: An analysis was conducted using Rolando García's epistemology of complexity, evaluating the linear economy model, the circular economy, and its relevance in addressing the issue of urban solid waste accumulation while minimizing environmental impact. Results: The results revealed that, while the circular economy offers benefits, it also requires increased consumption of resources such as water, electricity, and fossil fuels for its processes, which impacts sustainability and the environment. Additionally, new strategies, urban equipment, and regulations are needed to facilitate waste collection, processing, and industrialization. Discussion and Conclusions: It is concluded that, to effectively implement the circular economy, complementary strategies, proper infrastructure, and regulations are essential to reduce waste accumulation and improve sustainability in cities.
