Abstract

Introduction: Microlearning emerges as an innovative educational methodology that meets the demands of higher education in the digital age by offering brief and accessible content that fosters student autonomy and motivation. Methodology: This study, conducted with a sample of 138 university students in Ecuador, employed a structural equation model with a covariance-based approach to analyze the relationships between perceived usefulness of microlearning, learning flexibility and autonomy, and student motivation and engagement. Results: The analyses confirmed that perceived usefulness significantly influences learning flexibility and autonomy, which in turn impacts motivation and engagement. The obtained fit indices validate the proposed theoretical model. Discussion: Preferences were identified in microlearning formats and platforms, highlighting short videos, interactive quizzes, and the frequent use of tools such as WhatsApp and Instagram, indicating the need to adapt educational strategies to students' everyday digital tools. Conclusions: The study underscores the value of microlearning as an effective pedagogical strategy to personalize and optimize the educational experience in higher education, especially in contexts with technological infrastructure and accessibility challenges.
