Introduction: The end of the First World War caused a radical change in the world order characterized by Pax Britannica, and because of the changes caused in the international system, the behavior of States also changed. Methodology: The premises developed by the main theorists of the realistic school of International Relations will be used. Objective: We intend to carry out an analysis of Portuguese foreign policy during Salazar's government, using the realist paradigm. Analysis: In addition to applying the realistic paradigm of International Relations, it will be necessary to provide a description of Portugal's objectives and national interest in foreign policy, to establish whether or not there is rationality between them and its behavior, with the purpose of ensuring its survival in the heart of the hostile international system. Conclusion: We will verify that there are different configurations of the international system before and after the Second World War, and that the Salazar government's responses were all defensive, in the sense of defending Portuguese interests against the hostile interests of third states, always in the wake of realistic paradigm.
