Introduction: The university academic staff is maturing, strategies have been proposed so that talent does not retire, but it is time to prepare the generational relay to preserve tacit knowledge and avoid a decrease in scientific products that will strongly affect the university. Methodology: Qualitative approach with case study design, under the light of systems theory; five research professors and 12 key positions were interviewed. Instruments: semi-structured interview guides and hermeneutics. The discourse was analyzed with qualitative software. Results: A theoretical model of the succession plan for research professors in a Mexican public university is presented. Discussions: Barnett and Davis (2008) published that the process has to be shown, which was corroborated by PI.02 when expressing that the university should socialize succession plans. Conclusions: Conclusions: Succession plans help in the management of human talent to carry out the generational replacement of professors-researchers without outbursts, hence the importance of the model designed, where the categories: succession plans, talent management, knowledge management are observed; likewise, the internal and external system of the Higher Education Institution is represented.
