Introduction: The article develops a systematic literature review complemented by a critical hermeneutic analysis. The research questions focused on identifying references for social sustainability in the organizational field and the mechanisms used for its evaluation, aiming to determine the robustness of this notion. Methodology: Using the Scopus database, documents from 2019 to 2024 were analyzed, considering the epistemological structure, theoretical foundation, perspectives from social responsibility and shared value, and evaluation tools. Results: A trend was observed towards practical rather than theoretical application of the concepts and a disparity in the robustness of the environmental pillar compared to the social and economic aspects of sustainability. Discussion: The critical approach interpreted sustainability as a metanarrative of modernity, dominated by an objective and scientific perspective. Conclusion: It is considered that social sustainability, social responsibility, and shared value are integrated with the current economic model, which limits their effectiveness as they do not promote a reinterpretation of the relationship with the extractivist world. It calls for a reflection on the unidirectionality of social sustainability and suggests considering a more inclusive perspective, involving different actors as determinants and not merely as evaluation criteria.
