Strengths, weaknesses and proposals for psychosocial intervention against gender-based violence

Abstract

Introduction: Gender violence is addressed by professionals from different disciplines and fields of intervention. In 2004, Organic Law 1/2004, of December 28, 2004, on comprehensive protection measures against gender violence was passed in Spain. Since then, progress has been made in the development of regulations, action protocols and coordination. Objectives: To analyze interventions in the field of gender violence from the point of view of professional experts. And to analyze the treatment of information on gender violence in two newspapers of the Valencian Community. Methodology: We used methodological complementarity based on qualitative techniques such as interviews and documentary analysis of secondary sources, and quantitative techniques through the search and analysis of press reports. The results point out strengths and weaknesses in the intervention that coincide with the documentary sources consulted in the discussion and that could be corrected by implementing the professionals' proposals. Conclusions: The professionals state that their proposals are not listened to by the public administration. As regards the press, it is essential to have a gender perspective in the media, and training in communication science studies.

Social Worker. Master in Family Guidance and Counseling (Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca). Master in Equality and Gender in the public and private sphere (University Jaume I of Castellón) Doctor by the University of Valencia. Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work of the UV. Teacher of the Master of Prevention and Intervention with adolescents at risk and filioparental violence (MEPIAR). Researcher at the Institut Universitari d'Estudis de les Dones (IUED) and at the Grupo de Estudios Sociales, Intervención e Innovación (Gesiin). She has presented papers at conferences, published books and articles on professional intervention in gender-based violence, communication in Social Work, burnout syndrome in professionals working in gender-based violence.
