Abstract

Introduction: People with physical disabilities face physical and social barriers that limit their access to a full sexual life, such as lack of accessibility to private spaces, poor training of health professionals and the persistence of myths about their sexuality. Methodology: This study reviewed research published in Spanish in the last decade on programmes to modify attitudes towards sexuality in people with disabilities, using a systematic review in databases such as Dialnet, Medline and Scopus. Results: Of 68 articles identified, 7 met the inclusion criteria. The results show negative perceptions, especially among family members of people with motor disabilities, indicating the need for programmes to change these attitudes. Discussion and Conclusions: A comprehensive approach combining education, awareness raising and inclusive policies is essential for persons with disabilities to enjoy a fulfilling sexual life, overcoming the social and physical barriers they face.

Author Biographies

Nerea Ibáñez Torres, University of Alicante

Has a degree in Psychology from the UNED, a Master's degree in General Health Psychology from the CEU Cardenal Herrera University and a PhD from the University of Alicante. She specialises in the treatment of mental disorders, intervention in gender violence and psychological support in the field of sports. Her clinical practice includes individual and couple therapy, with emphasis on emotional regulation and trauma treatment. In addition, she has collaborated as an internship tutor at various universities and has participated in research projects on mental health and sport.

Raquel Suriá Martínez, University of Alicante

Holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Alicante, with the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. She is currently a lecturer in the Department of Communication and Social Psychology and tutor at the UNED. Her main areas of research are the psychosocial inclusion of young people with disabilities and the effects of gender violence on minors. She has published more than 80 scientific articles and has presented more than 100 papers at national and international conferences. Her research has been widely recognised, accumulating more than 2300 citations and an H-index of 27.

Juan Andrés Samaniego Gisbert, Universidad Isabel I

Psychologist with clinical experience, specialising in basic psychological processes, neuropsychology and forensic psychology. He holds a degree in Psychology from the UNED and a Master's degree in General Health Psychology from the International University of La Rioja (UNIR). He has also been accredited as an expert in forensic psychology by the Consejo General de Colegios de Psicólogos. Currently, he is doing his PhD in Psychology at the University of Alicante, focusing on intervention in behavioural disorders and the application of ICT in education for people with disabilities. At the teaching level, she teaches in the Master's Degree in Forensic Psychology and in the Degree in Psychology at the University Isabel I.
