Photographic heritage as a teaching resource: design of a service-learning activity based on the use of family photographs

Introduction: through this article we propose the design of an educational service-learning activity based on the study and recovery of photographic heritage. Methodology: a bibliographic review of the most relevant studies has been carried out to formalize our proposal, which has been designed considering precepts from different disciplines such as archival science, didactics or art history. Theorical Framework: in this section we analyze the service-learning model and assess its usefulness in the teaching of heritage issues. We also take into consideration several citizen participation initiatives focused on heritage recovery. Especially the so-called “family albums”, which try to make visible the photographic heritage that remains hidden in our homes. Results: Based on the elements outlined in the previous section, we built our educational proposal, which seeks to promote the instruction of students in heritage issues while they carry out a project that will result in a social benefit. Conclusions: finally, we justify the achievement of the proposed objectives: the design of a service-learning activity through a collaborative heritage inventory. We consider that, with the relevant adaptations, it offers great versatility for use in classrooms of any educational stage.
