Benjamín Palencia: Sets, scenery and costumes for "La Barraca"

Introduction: This research focuses on the study of the figure of Benjamín Palencia and his collaboration with Federico García Lorca's ‘La Barraca’, in particular, the set and costume designs for La vida es sueño. Methodology: Iconographic study was used as a methodology, complemented with a classification of the visual elements and an analysis of the cultural and social notions surrounding the artist and his work. Results: Based on this approach, a thematic corpus of Palencia's work within the company was established. In addition, a detailed analysis and systematisation of the figurines and sets designed by the painter was carried out. Discussion and Conclusions: The need for more detailed studies on Palencia in the theatrical field is stressed, as well as the updating of his biography. Finally, the achievement of the initial objectives of the research, such as the delimitation of his work for the company, the establishment of a historical context and the understanding of theatrical scenography in the European and Spanish sphere, are assessed.
