Ecoturism as a driver of local development entrepreneurship

Introduction: Ecotourism, as an alternative to conventional tourism, reduces environmental impact and generates economic and social benefits for local communities. This study analyses the economic, social and environmental management of 100 ecotourism entrepreneurs in Santa Elena, Ecuador, and their contribution to sustainability. Methodology: An analysis of ecotourism entrepreneurs was conducted to examine factors such as management, service quality and innovation, which are key to the survival of these businesses. Results: It was highlighted that, although entrepreneurs implement sustainable strategies, they face challenges such as the lack of public policies and the need for greater community participation. Integrated management was shown to be a key driver for local development. Conclusions: The study recommends further research, considering contextual and social variables, and highlights the need for training and technical assistance programmes to consolidate ecotourism as a sustainable economic activity, boosting community development.
