Abstract

Introduction: This study analyzes the selection of journalism students in radio and television in Chile, highlighting the importance of oral expression and communication skills from the perspective of employers. Methodology: Interviews were conducted with directors and press editors of national media in the Metropolitan Region of Chile, using a semi-structured questionnaire to gather opinions on the methodology of selecting students for internships and the relevance of voice as a communication tool. Results: Personal aptitudes, technical skills, and interpersonal skills are fundamental in everyday journalistic practice, with assertive use of voice and non-verbal language standing out within the latter. Discussion: The importance of conveying closeness to the audience, vocal identity, and the selection of diverse voices are fundamental for employers; however, they note that students in internships exhibit problems with intonation, breathing, emphasis, articulation, diction, lack of vocabulary, and difficulty improvising. Conclusions: Oral expression is fundamental for success in journalistic practice and requires rigorous training to overcome the deficiencies found in students.
