Advances and challenges of educational curation: a systematic review

Abstract

Introduction: In the information age, with the advancement of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), digital curation arises, which is the process of selecting, organizing, and presenting digital content in a meaningful way, which in the educational field, is known as educational curatorship. The main objective of this article is to provide a comprehensive view of digital curation applied to education, examining the advances and challenges. Methodology: Regarding the methodology, a systematic review of the academic literature was carried out, through the Web of Science (WOS), SCIMAGO, and Google Scholar databases on curation. Results: The main tools and platforms that education institutions are using in educational curation were identified and analyzed, as well as common practices adopted in various fields. Discussions: It can be said that digital curation has become a process that educational technology has taken advantage of to manage the large amount of information that can be found online and thereby guarantee the quality and relevance of educational digital content. Conclusions: Despite its benefits, digital curation faces several challenges, including the veracity and reliability of content, ethics of curation, and data privacy.

PhD in Educational Research, line of research in Educational Technology, level 1 researcher of the National System of Researchers of CONAHCYT, member of the Accreditation Council for Engineering Education (CACEI), and of the Mexican Council for Educational Research A.C. (COMIE). She is a member of the Mexican Network of Institutional Repositories (REMERI), member of the Mexican Thematic Network for the Development and Incorporation of Educational Technology (RED LATE Mexico), full time professor and researcher at the Technological University of Tecámac and representative of the Academic Body in Consolidation of Technological Services.

Omar Tellez Barrientos, Universidad Tecnológica de Tecámac

Degree in Computer Science, Master's Degree in Information Technology, PhD in Administration. Full-time Professor in the Division of Information and Communication Technologies of the Universidad Tecnológica de Tecámac and member of the Academic Body in Consolidation of Technological Services.

Angelina Díaz Alva, Universidad Tecnológica de Tecámac

Bilingual accountant, Master and PhD in Administration, specialising in Finance. She has 25 years of teaching experience at university level and 13 years at postgraduate level.
