University extension as a strategy for social transformation: the experience of Caribbean University Corporation - CECAR

Abstract

Introduction: University outreach is conceived as a means of transforming society, especially when Higher Education Institutions focus on developing projects aimed at diverse communities. Objective: the objective of this study was to describe the contribution of CECAR's social outreach centers and clinics in Sucre during the year 2023.  Methodology: a mixed methodological approach was used, information was collected through a documentary review and structured surveys applied to the coordinators of these centers. Results: It was evidenced that university extension at CECAR has had a significant positive impact on the local community, improving the quality of life and providing practical solutions to social and economic problems. Discussion: the results highlight that the participation of students and teachers has been fundamental to the success of the extension programs, highlighting the development of interpersonal skills and the application of knowledge in real contexts. Conclusions: Extension programs at CECAR have proven to be effective in local contexts, contributing to the well-being of communities in Sucre.
