Introduction: Given the importance that institutional transformation currently plays in the processes and activities of the Colombian National Police, this research analyzes and defends the thesis that the treatment that takes place in the exchanges of police attention to citizens should be based on a style of interpersonal communication usually called “assertive communication”. Methodology: For the development of this research, a descriptive and correlational qualitative methodology was adopted, using semi-structured interviews with a sample of citizens and uniformed personnel of the Colombian National Police assigned to the National Model of Community Policing by Quadrants. Results: The results of the research indicate that assertive communication, respect for human dignity and honesty are desirable elements in the development of a harmonious relationship between both parties. Discussions: The results obtained invite us to consider the importance of training in communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) in order to strengthen relationships with the community. Conclusions: Finally, it is noted that assertive communication is the de facto foundation of legitimacy in community policing.
