Abstract

Introduction. This article, part of the INVOLFAM project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, examines the participation of families of foreign origin in primary schools in Catalonia. Despite progress, the participation of these families remains limited. Methodology. A qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with representatives of the educational administration, family associations (AFA) and the third sector in Catalonia was used. Results. The results highlight the need to improve teacher training and to promote collaborative community initiatives. Shortcomings in traditional family participation frameworks are identified, suggesting the need for more inclusive strategies that reflect family diversity. Discussion. The study suggests updating the forms of family participation in the educational context, proposing the inclusion of new professionals, such as social educators, to strengthen the links between school and community. Conclusions. In order to improve the participation of families of foreign origin, it is essential to make progress in the training of teachers, to promote community initiatives and to increase the number of school staff in order to promote greater integration and participation in the educational environment.
