Scientific Productivity in a Public and a Private University in Peru: Indicators of Production, Collaboration, and Impact

Abstract

Introduction: Scientific productivity is a key indicator for evaluating the impact of universities on knowledge development. This study compares the scientific productivity of two Peruvian universities using a bibliometric approach, analyzing the quantity and quality of publications, research areas, and author profiles, assessed through co-authorship, citations, indexing, and visibility. Methodology: A bibliometric approach using Scopus was employed to analyze the quantity, quality, research areas, and collaborations of 2.927 publications, identifying trends in scientific productivity and dynamics of collaboration, visibility, and funding. Results: Between 2014 and 2023, the public university showed growth in scientific production, while the private university improved its impact. Both made progress in productivity, but structural inequalities persist. Although visibility and citations improved, they face challenges in quality and high-impact publications, highlighting the importance of collaboration and institutional strategies. Discussion: These findings reflect the impact of institutional and external policies, providing a deeper understanding of the factors affecting scientific productivity in both universities. Conclusions: Research promotion policies have improved scientific productivity, but structural limitations, inter-institutional inequalities, and challenges in quality, thematic specialization, and international visibility remain.
