Abstract

Introduction: Communication in Nursing is essential to providing quality and safe care to patients. This study explores patients' perceptions of the communicative competence of Nursing professionals in hospitals in southern Ecuador. Methodology: A quantitative and cross-sectional approach was used, applying the Questionnaire for the Identification of the Degree of Perceived User Satisfaction concerning the Communication Competence of the Nursing Professional to 463 hospitalized patients in the areas of surgery, clinic, and gynecology-obstetrics. The data were analyzed with non-parametric tests. Results: Most patients were satisfied with the nurses' communication, highlighting satisfaction in verbal communication and professional attitude. No significant differences were found in the perception of communication according to sex or residence. Still, a significant trend was observed about the level of schooling and the length of hospitalization. Conclusions: Effective communication in Nursing is well perceived by most patients, although factors such as the level of education and the size of hospitalization may influence this perception. These results underscore the need for continuous improvement in nurses' communication skills to optimize the quality of care.
