Abstract

Introduction: Besides affecting human health, the COVID-19 pandemic caused economic, social, family, educational, and emotional disturbances that have not been fully revealed in university students. Methodology: To further analyze these consequences, this work explored possible modifications between the general characteristics of student group “A” who began their higher education before the health emergency, and student group “D” who did so after it ended. Both groups answered an anonymous questionnaire upon admission to the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry degree. This questionnaire analyzed various aspects such as sociodemographics, family, study strategies, self-perception of deficiencies, and student concerns. Results and Discussion: The sociodemographic similarity was found in both groups. The perception of shortcomings in some of the basic areas to succeed in this degree increased in group “D”. Additionally, this group expressed concerns regarding their ability to adequately perform at the university level. Conclusions: Different and important study strategies were found between groups. It is necessary to deepen knowledge about the student's sense of self-efficacy to address their cognitive deficiencies and to promote learning strategies; including activities that better respond to their current characteristics, resources, and preferences.
