Introduction: The study of the contributions of three organic intellectuals reinforces the idea of the geographical myth of the Isthmus as a country of transit and allows the installation of a series of ideas that will serve as bases in the nationalist discourse and the construction of the national State. Methodology: The research has a qualitative design and information was obtained through the use of primary sources, its objective was to reconstruct the type of content of nationalist discourses during the 19th and 20th centuries. Results: The contribution of these organic intellectuals was significant in forging the fundamental foundations of a national feeling that laid the foundations of a modern national State in Panama. Discussions: The history of the construction of the Panamanian nation during the 19th and 20th centuries through the speeches of these intellectuals, puts into tension the image so widespread in an important part of historiography that maintains that the nature of Panama is of artificial or “operetta republic”. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the fight for its autonomy and subsequent independence of Panama was a fight that was always present throughout its long history.
