Professional opportunities for translators and interpreters in the fields of international commerce and international relations

Introduction: Students of translation and interpreting who intend to find a place in the labor market are often unaware of the realities of how it works. It is therefore necessary for them to receive professional guidance during their academic preparation. For this reason, in the subject "The Translator and Interpreter's Profession", taught in the last year of the Degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada, during the 2023/2024 academic year, students carried out fieldwork in which they interviewed professionals from different areas. Methodology: This paper presents a comparative analysis of interviews with four international commerce professionals trained in translation and interpreting, and four other professionals in the field of international relations. In addition, students in the last year of the aforementioned degree program (177 subjects) were surveyed to obtain their perception of the professional opportunities in international commerce and international relations, since this degree program does not offer courses that allow them to study these areas. Results: Both sectors are promising career opportunities, but translators and interpreters require specialized knowledge to find their way into them. Translators and interpreters are versatile figures in the company and prove their worth when the company begins its internationalization process. Discussions: The interviews condense a vision, although incomplete, absolutely accurate of both sectors, which is useful for future graduates who wish to build a career in one of these fields. Conclusions: Given that, in the survey, more than 85% of the students expressed their interest in entering these fields professionally, it would be advisable that, in future reforms of the academic program of the Degree, subjects that provide students with a general overview of both sectors be integrated.
