Introduction: Governments promote postgraduate education to maximize benefits such as the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enhance employability, job stability, and professional salaries, resulting in a better quality of life. Postgraduate education not only improves individual prospects but also contributes to socioeconomic development, becoming a crucial strategic tool. This research focuses on analyzing institutional variables that influence student attrition in master's and doctoral programs. Methodology: Using the PRISMA (2020) model, an exhaustive review was conducted, obtaining 32 research articles on factors affecting students' decisions to drop out or remain in postgraduate programs. Results: The results revealed six main variables affecting organizational management and student retention: lack of funding programs, absence of institutional support policies, inadequate curriculum design, low faculty-student interaction, lack of student support strategies, and deficiencies in infrastructure. Conclusions: This study provides valuable information for designing strategies to promote student retention and reduce dropout rates, highlighting the importance of effective organizational management and solid institutional support for success in postgraduate programs.
