Introduction: Communication and leadership are interconnected and essential elements in educational institutions, particularly those focused on basic education. The research focuses on the problems derived from ineffective communication, weak leadership and low staff motivation, which have affected the internal functioning of an educational institution. Methodology: Transactional-descriptive with a mixed approach, using an organizational communication test applied to administrative, teaching and auxiliary personnel, as well as a SWOT analysis to evaluate the state of internal communication of a Mexican educational institution with more than 25 years of service. Results: The results show that the institution has an average level of organizational communication, with clear areas of opportunity. Discussion: Although employees are able to express their ideas, there are still failures in communication among colleagues and with management, which affects the work environment. The implementation of participatory workshops on leadership and interpersonal relations favored collective reflection and contributed to improving the perception of the organizational environment. Conclusions: It highlights the importance of strengthening communication and leadership to contribute to the fulfillment of sustainable development objectives, especially those related to quality education and decent work.
