Abstract

Introduction: This study reviews the significant developments in the metaverse and its impact on digital reality, focusing on advancements in immersive technologies, digital infrastructures, and renewable energy integration. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines, focusing on articles published between 01 January 2022 and 30 June 2024. Web of Science with search terms like “metaverse”, “digital infrastructure”, “immersive technologies”, “renewable energy”, and “data science”. Results: The review highlights the critical role of 5G networks, cloud computing, and edge computing in supporting AR and VR applications, the integration of renewable energy sources to enhance sustainability, and the use of data science for optimizing user experiences and energy resources. Discussions: The findings confirm the importance of robust digital infrastructures and reveal new perspectives on the rapid evolution and broader adoption of immersive technologies across various sectors. Conclusions: Continued investment in digital infrastructures and renewable energy integration is essential. Future research should expand the study period, diversify languages, include grey literature, conduct longitudinal studies, and explore the impact of energy integration and interoperability challenges.
