Introduction: This research offers a systematic literature review of the most relevant works on packaging in the food industry published in the last decade, with the aim of highlighting lines of research and pending issues, especially from the interest of communication professionals. Methodology: Web of Science records were analysed, predominantly studies conducted in Europe, with a mixed research approach including interviews, field experiments, surveys, observation and quantification of visual elements. Results: The most recurrent themes in the literature analyse consumer decision-making through packaging and nutrition warnings. Discussion: The study highlights the need to review the categories in which these articles are indexed in databases and highlights the lack of research that addresses packaging design from a communicative perspective. Conclusions: It is suggested to expand research on packaging in the food industry, focusing on design from a communicational perspective, to fill the gaps identified in the literature.
