Regulations and perception of sustainable tourism in a Flora and Fauna Protection Area in Mexico

Introduction: Analyzes the legal regulations and residents' perception of the Flora and Fauna Protection Area of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Methodology: Mixed case study, reviews the regulations, in order to determine if there is correspondence with international criteria and contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Tourism Development. A 24-question questionnaire was designed, validated by three experts with a Cronbach's Alpha α =0.96, applying 166 surveys. Results: Correspondence with international norms, we delved into international instruments that our country has signed in National Areas, constitutional provisions, federal laws, regulations, presidential decrees, state and municipal laws and proposals to modify the declaration. Respondents recognize the positive value of tourism activity 62%, efforts to care for the environment 62%, and consider that awareness should be raised about its care and communication of actions 54%. Discussion: The Declaration should be modified in order to expand it, zonify it, establish guidelines for its management, and issue a Management Program to preserve the sandfalls and marine biodiversity. CONANP's digital communication strategies raise awareness and action for their conservation. Conclusions: The regulations require important modifications and residents are aware of the economic, social and environmental value of the protected area.
