Abstract

Introduction: Mental Health is a state of well-being that allows a person to perform activities, cope with daily stress and work productively. On the other hand, effective communication is fundamental in professional training and to respond to the demands of the work environment. Objective: This research aimed to determine if there is a relationship between Mental Health and Communication Skills of university students in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. Methodology: A quantitative, non-xperimental, cross-sectional, descriptive-relational approach was used. Speech Therapy and Kinesiology students of the Universidad del Alba participated, to whom the “Positive Mental Health Scale” and the Communicative Competences survey were applied. Results: It was evidenced that the best achieved skills are expressive and oral communication followed by reading comprehension, while written expression is the lowest. When analyzing the data by career, it is observed that phonoaudiology has better performance in expressive, oral and written communication, while kinesiology in reading comprehension. Regarding mental health, the best achieved skill is problem solving followed by prosocial attitude and self-control. The critical points are personal satisfaction and autonomy. Conclusion: In summary, in both careers, mental health is more affected than post-pandemic communication skills.
