Abstract

Introduction: The central theme of this research is the need to strengthen and competitively project the agricultural sector in Colombia. Methodology: Therefore, through the comparative method, the national development plans of the last three governments have been reviewed, and a parallel has been made with the international competitiveness measurement indices to identify the way in which Colombian economic policies have impacted the agricultural sector. Discussions: Since the economic opening, it is the primary sector on which it mainly bases its productivity; but also in this sector there is less evidence of development and international visibility. Either due to the lack of technical standards that affect quality, high prices derived from an inefficient production process and mainly from an onerous distribution and marketing logistics chain, added to this, is the environmental impact it produces and even the little or no sustainable remuneration to the level of quality of life of the producers and their families. Conclusions: Thus finding that, although the improvement in the sector since the economic opening has been significant, in recent years they have concentrated on covering immediate needs and have not been able to project the sector to be internationally competitive.
