Student perceptions of the in-person model and the transition to hybrid education: A systematic review of the academic literature (2020–2024)

Abstract

Introduction: This study aimed to analyze, through a systematic review, the perception of university students regarding the transition from the face-to-face educational model to the hybrid model in higher education, after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: The PRISMA methodology was used, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria defined based on language, type of document, target population, thematic relevance, access, and publication database. The search was carried out in Scopus, Web of Science, and Springer, applying strategic Boolean operators. Results: Initially, 185 articles were identified, of which, after the filtering process, evaluation of titles, abstracts, and full-text review, 9 indexed studies that met all the established criteria were selected. Discussion: The selected articles showed that the hybrid model has been positively valued by students, highlighting improvements in motivation, satisfaction, adaptation, autonomy, and academic performance. Likewise, there was recognition of its potential to enrich the educational experience and consolidate its position as a sustainable pedagogical approach. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results support the viability of the hybrid model as a response to post-pandemic challenges in higher education.
