Introduction: This study explores the social and hierarchical dynamics at Supertubos beach, Peniche, Portugal, focusing on the phenomenon of localism. Supertubos is an iconic surfing destination due to its exceptional waves, generating intense competition and exclusion between surfers. Methodology: An ethnographic approach was adopted, combining participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. Over three months, interactions among surfers were observed and documented, with 30 interviews conducted and 50 surveys distributed to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Results: Findings indicate that localism is predominant at Supertubos, with local surfers forming closed groups and excluding visitors. Interviews revealed divergent perceptions of localism between locals and visitors, significantly affecting social cohesion. Surfing skill partially mediated exclusion but did not guarantee complete integration. Discussions: The study highlights the need to address disparities in surfers' experiences to foster a more inclusive community. Strategies to balance resource preservation with social inclusion, including educational programs and community events, are discussed. Conclusions: The results emphasize the importance of implementing policies that promote inclusion and mutual respect at Supertubos. Future studies should explore further strategies to enhance social cohesion and reduce localism, considering the impact of collaborative tourism and beach management practices.
