Abstract

Introduction: The investigation and design of a sustainability protocol for small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) for an emerging economy, which leads to the optimization of natural resources and raw materials, which in turn helps to comply with the goals of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), is the object of this study. In this study, international and national practices were analyzed, specifically from the region of Santander, Colombia. Methodology: Bibliographic analysis was used in the Scopus database to discern business sustainability and a survey was carried out for Santander MSMEs, using questions with mixed methodology, with the combination of quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Results: There are various sustainability strategies, however, a large part of the respondents say they are unaware of the SDGs and their application in the industry. Discussion: The implementation of sustainability strategies in Santander can represent a great challenge, but also an opportunity to improve its competitiveness and resilience in a global context increasingly oriented towards sustainability. Conclusion: To increase sustainability impact, firstly, integration with cooperatives could be particularly beneficial.
