Abstract

Introduction: Ecuador has a long tradition of oil exports in the Amazon, but revenues from this activity depend mainly on the variation in the price of crude oil, without considering that it is a non-renewable resource that will be depleted. Methodology: A quantitative methodology was used, analysing data on the percentage share of selected exports and imports. Results: The study suggests that Ecuador should focus on implementing technology to export value-added products, not only in their original form. Technology transfer and the training of new generations to develop products such as medicines is also key. Discussion: While it is necessary to continue exporting agricultural, maritime and mining resources, the focus should be on ‘industrial reform’ to boost the creation of added value in exports. Conclusions: Ecuador must invest in technological innovation and education to diversify its exports and reduce dependence on oil, creating a more sustainable economy.
