Abstract

Introduction: This article explores the causes of dropout in three long-term home care pilot projects implemented in Castilla y León with the aim of detecting mismatches between services offered and expectations. Methodology: A mixed-methods evaluative research exercise has been carried out, combining quantitative analysis with interviews with people served and professionals involved. Results: It is possible to identify some highly influential factors in the abandonment of this type of programmes: preference for other types of care, the financial outlay associated with the co-payment of services or the fact that support needs are not fully met. Discussions: These factors lead in many cases to a preference for residential institutionalisation, in contrast to more recent policy strategies that advocate home and community-based care. Conclusions: In the evaluation processes of long-term care programs, it is of great interest to study the factors that motivate the decision to voluntarily leave the program in those persons who have been receiving care for some time. This will make it possible to gather very useful information for the design of more flexible care strategies adapted to the individuals and their demands at different times.

Pre-doctoral researcher hired by the Regional Government of Castile and León in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the University of Valladolid. His lines of research focus on long-term care, the elderly, rural areas, and social inclusion policies.
